Using Fat to Burn Fat?
Yes. CLA, or conjugated linoleic acid, has been proven to help with body mass composition – fat loss through the enhancement of lipid (fat) metabolism. It is a type of Trans fat, but not like the ones you’ve been hearing terrible things about.
CLA supports the body and offers many other biological benefits apart from fat metabolism. It boosts the immune system, reducing carcinogens and other substances in the body that can make it more susceptible to cancer. It has also been used to help those suffering from Crohn’s Disease, Diabetes type II, heart disease and gastrointestinal distress.
Where You Find It
Conjugated linoleic acid supplements are usually made from sunflower or safflower oils, but they also occur in nature – usually in meats and milk products. The problem with eating these foods instead supplementing is that milk and red meat usually contain too many other deleterious qualities to consume in large quantities. In CLA, the direct biological process that keeps you from being fat is the inhibition of fat storage in the cells. It also helps those who want to lose fat and maintain lean muscle for a better physique.
How it Differs to Other Trans Fats
Not all Trans fats are bad – just most of them. CLA may be the one exception to the rule, partly because it is still not a product of major food industry. It occurs naturally in grass-fed meats and in the milk of cows that are fed an organic grass-based diet. The rates of conjugated linoleic acid in organically grown, grass-fed cows are even higher than cows fed with grain, especially GMO grains. Although CL acid is a Trans fatty acid, it has a cis bond, and so its chemical structure is different from industrial Trans fats. This singular chemical bond is the difference between causing heart disease, obesity, and cancer, instead of helping to reverse or even cure these, as is the case with CL acids.
Dosage of CLA for Efficacy
In over 30 different recent clinical trials, it was found that a dosage of approximately 3.2 grams of conjugated linoleic acid daily could very well be beneficial for reducing one’s weight – especially in obese patients. In another study, it was shown that there was a 1% increase in lean muscle body mass per week of supplementation. Researchers at a Scandinavian medical clinic conducted these tests. Ultimately, all the studies point to it being effective as a fat-busting weight loss agent that offers health benefits.
It is available over the counter and does not require a doctor’s prescription. You can find high-quality supplements that utilize plant oils, instead of having to eat lots of meat and dairy. These foods tend to produce mucus and make the body more acidic rather than alkaline, which is not good. Many conjugated linoleic acid supplements come in 1000 mg pills, so you can take several CLA a day, throughout the day, to make sure you are boosting your body’s fat-burning abilities.
